The Forthcoming 13th Edition

Creative Writing in All Genres
and
Visual Arts in All Mediums

Please submit all work via email attachment
(MS Word, Georgia 12, bold)
to gwagner@jwu.edu
(Include your address, phone number, and email.)

Deadline for the 13th edition is February 28, 2011
(However, we would highly appreciate earlier submissions!)

Submissions should ideally be approximately five pages or less.
However, longer works will be accepted if space permits.

Each submission must have the following statement:
“The attached submission(s) is (are) the original words of this writer. RICTE has permission to publish it (them) in The Teacher as Writer.”
(Print Name, Sign Name, and Date)

Submission is open to members only. Any teacher in Rhode Island or Massachusetts is welcomed to join RICTE at the time of submission.

Annual dues amount: $20, student teacher $10, substitute teacher $10, first-year teacher $10, retired $5, (departmental 10 or fewer $100, 11 or more $150)

Announcing the RICTE Writing Contest 2011
Entries Due March 15

The Rhode Island Council of Teachers of English (RICTE) is sponsoring a contest to recognize the writing talents of Rhode Island students. We encourage you to submit your best writing by following the requirements below.

DIVISIONS:

  • DIV.1 (Grades 5 & 6)
  • DIV. 2 (Grades 7 & 8);
  • DIV. 3 (Grades 9 & 10)
  • DIV.4 (Grades 11&12)
  • DIV.5 (College Level)

CATEGORIES:

  • Short Fiction (1200-word maximum)
  • Essay (not a research-based paper; 1200-word maximum)
  • Poetry (ONE poem only)

REQUIREMENTS:

1. You must be enrolled in a Rhode Island school or college.
2. You may submit only ONE entry, which must be titled.
3. You must type and double-space your entry.
4. You must demonstrate clarity, effective use of language, and originality of topic and
thought.
5. You should use the entry form below as your cover sheet. Your name SHOULD NOT appear on the entry itself. Your entry must be signed by a teacher who is a RICTE member who can sponsor ONLY SIX (6) ENTRIES.

AWARDS: First, Second, and Third Place awards will be given in each division. Winners will be notified by mid-April and invited to late April award ceremony. Should there be no viable entries in a particular category, the selection committee reserves the right to withhold awards.

RICTE Fall Conference

The annual RICTE conference is resuming this year and will be held on November 6th at the New England Institute of Technology. Our keynote speaker is the distinguished novelist, Michael White, and the conference theme is as follows:

Local History, Literature, and

The Composition Classroom

The conference will run from 8:30am to 2:30pm with two break-out sessions and a round table discussion after lunch. Breakfast and a snack will also be served. All food is included in the registration fee. We will also have publishers on hand.
